My journey has been shaped by faith, curiosity, resilience and a desire to contribute something meaningful to society. Every article, every manuscript and every book reflects lessons learned through life, service and observation. What began as simple reflections has grown into a lifelong commitment to publishing knowledge that educates, encourages and empowers.

🌱 THE BEGINNING

Every Author Starts Somewhere

Long before the first published book, there were handwritten notes, church magazine articles and a desire to encourage others through words.

Writing That Began in Service

My writing journey began more than twelve years before I became a published author. During those early years, I wrote inspirational articles for church magazines, believing that words had the power to comfort, encourage and transform lives.

One of my earliest published articles, "Donate a Smile to the Homeless", appeared in The Consoling Eye, a publication of Consolata Shrine Catholic Church in Nairobi. The article encouraged readers to extend compassion and dignity to people often forgotten by society, reminding us that even a simple act of kindness can restore hope.

Although I did not realise it then, those early articles were laying the foundation for everything that would follow.

Combining Technology with Storytelling

After completing my studies in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), I realised that technology could become a bridge between my ideas and the people I hoped to reach.

I built my own website where I published fresh inspirational and educational articles every week. It became a growing library of reflections covering faith, leadership, health, environmental stewardship and everyday life.

Each new article strengthened my confidence as a writer and expanded my audience beyond the walls of the church, allowing readers from different backgrounds to engage with my work.

Nature Became My Writing Studio

Whenever I could, I escaped the noise of everyday life and found peace in forests, hillsides, rivers and open landscapes. Those quiet places became my classroom, my office and my source of inspiration.

I rarely travelled without a notebook. Ideas often arrived unexpectedly while walking through nature or sitting quietly beneath a tree. Many of those handwritten notes eventually became articles, chapters and books.

Looking back, I realise that nature taught me patience, observation and reflection—qualities that continue to shape every page I write today.

🌍 THE TURNING POINT

When Everything Changed

Sometimes the greatest opportunities emerge from our greatest challenges. What initially felt like a setback eventually became the beginning of my journey as a published author.

The Challenge of Keeping a Dream Alive

By 2020, my website had grown into a valuable collection of inspirational and educational articles. Every week I continued adding new content, believing that sharing knowledge was one of the best ways to serve others.

However, the post-COVID-19 period brought significant financial pressures. The increasing costs of web hosting, domain renewals, storage expansion and maintaining website security became difficult to sustain.

To keep the website running, I made a painful decision. I began removing older articles so there would be enough space for new ones. Although this allowed me to continue publishing, it meant that many valuable reflections were gradually disappearing from public view.

Losing the Website—but Not the Vision

Eventually, I was no longer able to keep up with the recurring costs required to maintain the website and its security certificate. The site went offline.

For a while, I felt disappointed, especially because I knew loyal readers could no longer access years of articles that had encouraged and inspired them.

Fortunately, I had carefully kept backups of almost everything I had written. When I restored my archive, I realised that nearly 99% of my articles had been preserved.

What first appeared to be the end of my writing journey soon revealed itself as the beginning of something much greater.

A Discovery Hidden in the Archives

As I carefully reviewed years of saved articles, I noticed something I had never fully appreciated before.

My writing naturally grouped itself into meaningful themes. There were collections on spirituality, leadership, environmental conservation, health, social issues and personal growth. Each category contained enough material to become the foundation of an entire book.

One collection stood out in particular—the spiritual reflections. Reading through them, I realised I was no longer looking at separate articles. I was looking at the early chapters of a manuscript waiting to be completed.

That moment changed everything. Instead of asking, "How can I rebuild my website?" I began asking, "Why not publish these as books?"

From Manuscript to Published Book

The decision to publish was exciting, but transforming years of articles into a professional book demanded patience, research and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Eight Months of Learning and Refinement

Turning my first manuscript into a published book became one of the most demanding and rewarding experiences of my life. Every chapter required careful review, editing and restructuring to ensure the message was both meaningful and engaging.

Beyond the writing itself, I had to learn the publishing process— choosing an appropriate title, refining the manuscript, designing a professional cover and preparing the book for publication. Although I led the process myself, I also sought valuable feedback from trusted friends, mentors and readers whose insights helped strengthen the final work.

After months of dedication, my first published book, Seen and the Unseen, became a reality. It was more than a publication; it was the fulfilment of a dream that had been quietly growing for more than a decade.

One Book Became Many

Publishing my first book did not mark the end of the journey—it marked the beginning of a much larger mission.

As I revisited my archive of articles and explored new ideas, more manuscripts began to emerge. Topics that had once existed as individual reflections evolved into complete books covering faith, leadership, health, environmental conservation, social justice, fiction and personal development.

Today, Mushila Writes proudly offers a growing catalogue of 24 published books, each reflecting a commitment to educating, inspiring and empowering readers across different backgrounds and generations.

People often ask where my ideas come from. The answer is simple: observation, curiosity, reflection and consistency.

Many writing sessions lasted for hours. There were days when I became so deeply immersed in a manuscript that I lost track of time, forgetting to eat or even step away from my desk. Every completed chapter became another step toward fulfilling the vision that had taken root years earlier.

Writing has never been just a hobby. It is a lifelong discipline, a responsibility and a calling to preserve stories, document ideas and share knowledge that can inspire positive change.

A Message to Aspiring Writers

"Do not wait for perfect circumstances before you begin writing. Start with the story you have, the experience you have lived and the voice you already possess. Every great author begins with a single page."

Writing has taught me that persistence is often more important than perfection. There will be moments of uncertainty, rejection and self-doubt, but every page you write brings you closer to becoming the writer you dream of becoming.

Read widely. Observe carefully. Listen deeply. Remain curious. Most importantly, never underestimate the power of your own story. Someone, somewhere, is waiting to read the words only you can write.
